Position Overview: CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda is seeking a dedicated and experienced Nurse In-Charge (ICU) to oversee all nursing activities within the Intensive Care Unit. The incumbent will ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care, adherence to CURE policies and procedures, and compliance with quality improvement and patient safety standards. This role requires strong leadership, clinical expertise, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Job Listing: Nurse In-Charge (ICU)

Key Responsibilities:

Nursing Services Management:

  • Foster collaboration and teamwork among healthcare providers in the ICU.
  • Coordinate patients’ care to ensure appropriate health services are provided.
  • Plan for adequate nursing staffing and formulate staffing rotas.
  • Ensure all nursing staff are trained and familiar with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with the biomedical team to ensure proper servicing of patient care equipment.

Nursing Practice:

  • Identify and meet patients’ nursing care needs using the nursing process.
  • Implement care bundles and ensure complete documentation on patients’ health records.
  • Conduct patient rounding and provide relevant education to patients and their families.
  • Supervise nursing staff and identify learning needs for each nurse.

Quality & Patient Safety:

  • Report and investigate patient sentinel events and near misses.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and implement recommendations for improvement.
  • Implement patient safety measures and monitor medication administration practices.
  • Conduct chart audits for nursing documentation and patients’ health records.

Infection Prevention and Control:

  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control program, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitor and prevent hospital-acquired infections and implement waste management procedures.
  • Educate patients and families on standard precautions while admitted to ICU.

Occupational Health & Safety:

  • Work in a manner that does not cause injury to oneself or others, following health and safety policies.
  • Report incidents and hazards promptly and participate in activities aimed at promoting well-being in the workplace.

Education and Professional Development:

  • Diploma in Nursing from a Recognized institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Critical Care Nursing is an added advantage.
  • Registration/Licensure by the in-country nursing regulation body.
  • At least 5 years of post-education experience in critical nursing, with 2 years in a supervisory/leadership role.
  • Experience in quality management certification or accreditation is desirable.

Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and project management abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and report writing.
  • Integrity, resilience, and willingness to adapt to change.
  • High achiever with attention to detail and ability to work well under pressure.

Job Listing: Nurse Practice Instructor

Responsibilities & Roles:

Nursing Practice Needs Assessment:

  • Monitor nursing care outcomes and conduct needs assessments.
  • Formulate clinical learning plans and conduct policy implementation audits.
  • Review evidence-based literature and participate in root cause analyses.
  • Review infection prevention and control data and patient satisfaction surveys.

Clinical Teaching and Mentorship:

  • Develop training modules and schedules for nursing education.
  • Implement competency-based orientation modules for new nurses.
  • Conduct skills sessions and ensure all nurses have required training.
  • Provide support for nursing practices and develop patient education materials.

Quality & Patient Safety:

  • Participate in quality improvement committees and internal audits.
  • Ensure implementation of safe care standards and nursing policies.
  • Conduct chart audits and identify nursing practice gaps for improvement.
  • Lead evidence-based nursing practice quality improvement projects.

Education and Professional Development:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a Recognized institution.
  • At least 5 years of post-education experience, with 2 years in pediatric nursing.
  • Registration/Licensure by the in-country nursing regulation body.
  • Experience in clinical teaching, mentorship, and quality management.

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies & Abilities:

  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and report writing.
  • High standard of professionalism, resilience, and integrity.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance practices and research processes.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and maintain composure.
