In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, a concrete truck driver became the unlikely hero after rescuing 14 people trapped in a taxi during heavy flooding on the Northern Bypass in Kampala this Wednesday.
The Northern Bypass, already notorious for its susceptibility to flooding during heavy downpours, witnessed a severe deluge that left several vehicles stranded. Among them was a fully occupied taxi, perilously close to being swept away by the strong currents.
Witnesses recall the dramatic scene as the fearless concrete truck driver, whose identity is yet to be revealed, maneuvered his massive vehicle towards the stranded taxi. Braving the turbulent waters, he skillfully attached a tow rope to the taxi, securing a lifeline for the occupants who were in imminent danger.
“The water was rising rapidly, and it was terrifying to see the taxi teetering on the edge. The concrete truck driver’s quick response and bravery saved lives,” said Sarah Nakato, an eyewitness at the scene.
With the taxi now in tow, the truck driver navigated through the flooded bypass, battling the current to reach safer ground. The rescue operation was nothing short of a high-stakes mission, as any misstep could have had disastrous consequences for both the rescuer and the rescued.
