Former Uganda Cranes captain Andy Mwesigwa is facing a financial battle to save his AMESCO High School in Wakiso, after a loan he obtained from ABC Capital Bank reportedly grew to about Shs1.3 billion.

Mwesigwa established the school after retiring from professional football, using money earned during his playing career to develop the institution. The school initially grew from a football academy before expanding into a fully-fledged education institution.

According to reports, the former defender obtained the loan between 2018 and 2020 to finance the school’s expansion and development.

However, the COVID-19 lockdowns disrupted the education sector and affected the school’s operations, making it difficult for Mwesigwa to maintain the agreed loan repayments.

Mwesigwa says he has already paid about Shs230 million, but the outstanding amount has continued to increase due to interest and other charges.

The former Cranes skipper has now appealed for help as he seeks to prevent the school from being taken over by the bank.

Mwesigwa has also raised concerns about what he describes as external interests within the sports fraternity, alleging that some individuals could be interested in acquiring the school.

The situation has attracted concern from sports fans who have followed Mwesigwa’s football career and his transition into education and business.

Having built the institution from his earnings as a footballer, Mwesigwa is now fighting to protect the school from losing the asset after years of investment.
