The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed Ethiopian tactician Firew Hailegebreal Asefa as the new head coach of Uganda’s women’s national football teams on a contract running until 2029.

Asefa will oversee the Crested Cranes, Queen Cranes and Teen Cranes, taking over from South African coach Sheryl Botes.

The Ethiopian coach is already familiar with Ugandan football, having previously guided Kampala Queens, now KCCA Women FC, to both the FUFA Women Super League and FUFA Women’s Cup titles.

Asefa also has experience at international level, having coached Ethiopia’s senior women’s national team and U20 side. He guided Ethiopia’s U20 team to victory at the 2021 CECAFA U20 Championship.

His appointment comes at a crucial point for the Crested Cranes, who are preparing for an Olympic qualifier against Zambia on October 8, 2026.

Asefa will now be tasked with rebuilding and developing Uganda’s women’s national teams across the senior, U20 and U17 levels, with a focus on competing on the continental and international stage.
