The family feud over the estate of late businessman James Musinguzi Garuga has intensified after his son, Alwin Garuga, accused his biological mother, Peace Kesiime Bagorogoza, of interfering with his father’s medical treatment and the administration of his estate.
In a video statement, Alwin alleged that his mother blocked a proposed medical evacuation to the United Kingdom and instead supported chest surgery at Nakasero Hospital. He further accused her and some family members of involvement in decisions that he claims contributed to his father’s death and the subsequent control of his estate.
Alwin also alleged that his mother and other relatives were involved in efforts to take control of Garuga’s assets, describing his accusations as based on facts he claims to possess.
He questioned why she had allegedly resisted efforts to fly Garuga abroad for specialised treatment if she believed Uganda’s health system was inadequate.
“Today she was in church at a memorial, claiming government hasn’t done anything about hospitals. You can’t get any healthcare in Uganda, So the question is, why would she be hell-bent on [having] my dad [operated on here] when she clearly, according to her, knows that Uganda has no healthcare system?” Alwyn said in a video statement.
Alwyn went further, directly blaming his mother for decisions surrounding his father’s treatment during the months before his death.
“My mother is no victim,” he said. “She’s my own biological mother. I know her better than all of you.”
James Garuga died on August 6, 2025, aged 72, after suffering complications related to cancer, following hip surgery and respiratory problems.
The dispute has since moved to court, with Alwin filing a caveat challenging his mother’s attempt to obtain sole authority to administer the estate. The High Court appointed the Administrator General to oversee the estate amid disagreements among family members.
“The purpose of this video is to put straight what happened, ’ll give you the factual record… so you can make up your own mind about exactly what’s going on and what is right or wrong.” Alwyn said.
Alwin’s allegations against his mother remain unproven and have not been established by a court. No criminal charges have been filed against her in connection with Garuga’s death.
