Wakiso District businessman, Muhammed Kakumba, is facing charges and subsequent remand to Luzira Government Prison for an alleged financial crime involving the embezzlement of over 7 billion shillings from Airtel Uganda through a computer network.

Kakumba, a 31-year-old resident of Namagoma Village, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi at Buganda Road Court, vehemently denying the charges leveled against him. The accusations center on one count of electronic fraud and theft.

The prosecution, represented by Ivan Kyazze, detailed the alleged criminal activities. According to the prosecution, Kakumba, in collaboration with others who are still at large, engaged in unlawful actions between October 27th and 28th, 2022, in Kampala or its vicinity. Their primary objective, as stated by Kyazze, was to secure unfair and unlawful gains.

In a deliberate scheme, Kakumba and his accomplices orchestrated the unauthorized transfer of a staggering 7,617,860,000 billion shillings from Airtel Money Uganda Ltd (AMCUL) Bank Money platform.

The illicit transactions were channeled to 1496 Airtel mobile numbers, all executed through a computer network.
