Veteran musician Moses Matovu, a member of the legendary Afrigo Band, has died after a suspected attack in Kibuli, Kampala.
Kabalagala Police confirmed that Matovu was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants on the morning of Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for medical attention but later succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.
Police said a task team was at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, while efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the suspected attackers.
More details about the circumstances of the attack are expected as investigations continue.
Matovu, aged 77, was one of Uganda’s most respected veteran musicians and a key figure in the history of Afrigo Band, where he served as a singer, saxophonist and bandleader for decades.
He entered professional music in 1967 and later helped establish Afrigo Band, which emerged in the mid-1970s and went on to become Uganda’s longest-serving music group.
Matovu led Afrigo for about five decades, mentoring generations of musicians and helping shape Uganda’s live music scene through the band’s distinctive blend of Ugandan rhythms, Congolese rumba, jazz and funk.
Known to many fans as Papa Moi, Matovu remained active in music for decades and was closely associated with Afrigo’s survival and continuity through changing generations of performers.
His death marks a major loss to Uganda’s music industry, with the circumstances surrounding the attack now under police investigation.
