Uganda has lost one of its most influential figures in the digital marketing industry. John Babirukamu, known for his groundbreaking work and transformative impact, passed away on Friday.

Reports indicate that Babirukamu committed suicide by jumping off the top floor of the Tagore Building in Kamwokya, Kampala. This devastating act has left his family, friends, and colleagues in shock and deep mourning.

Shortly before his death, Babirukamu sent a series of poignant messages to his family via WhatsApp, revealing the depth of his despair. “I have given life my all but now I find myself with only emptiness,” he wrote. In a heart-wrenching apology, he added, “I apologize for being an inconvenience in death as I was in life. I do sincerely love you all, and hope you find it in your hearts to forgive me. Kiss my nieces and nephews for me. They are the last joy that I held onto.”

Despite desperate attempts by family members to reach him, they were unable to make contact as his cellphone was switched off. Moments later, the tragic news of his death was confirmed. The incident has sparked concerns about the immense personal burdens Babirukamu may have been carrying.

John Babirukamu’s digital marketing career spanned over 15 years, during which he made significant contributions to the industry. At the time of his death, he was serving as the General Manager at Hedge Marketing, a full-service communications and marketing agency. In this role, he was responsible for business growth, client relationship management, strategy, talent management, and overall management oversight.

Prior to his role at Hedge, Babirukamu had a distinguished career with QG Group as the Digital Director. He successfully managed high-profile brands such as NTV, Uganda Breweries Limited, Equity Bank, BRAC, and Sheraton Kampala. His strategic vision and leadership transformed these brands’ digital presence, making him a respected figure in the industry.

Babirukamu’s most notable achievement was his transformative work at NBS. Taking the reins of a fledgling digital marketing unit, he built it into Uganda’s most engaging online presence in just three years. The robust digital strategies, large social media following, and interactive website of NBS today are a testament to his expertise and dedication.

In addition to his work at NBS, Babirukamu served as the Digital Communications Manager at MTN for two years, following his tenure at Metropolitan Republic, a marketing and advertising agency. His innovative approach and passion for digital marketing set new standards and inspired many in the industry.

John Babirukamu’s untimely death is a tragic reminder of the unseen struggles many face. As the digital marketing community and the nation mourn his loss, his contributions and legacy will not be forgotten. He leaves behind a lasting impact on Uganda’s digital landscape and a void that will be hard to fill.
