The Government of Uganda is reportedly planning to honour late Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu by constructing a house on his land in Mukono in recognition of his decades-long contribution to the country’s entertainment industry.

The announcement was made during a visit to Matovu’s family by State Minister for Information and Technology Joyce Nabbosa Ssebuggwawo and other government officials who paid tribute to the veteran musician.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Ssebuggwawo said the government has maintained a working relationship with Uganda’s creative sector and would support efforts to preserve Matovu’s legacy.

“Government has a good working relationship with the different sectors of art, and through this relationship, we are going to help honour the memory of the late Moses Matovu by constructing a house on his land,” Ssebuggwawo said.

The proposed house is intended to recognise Matovu’s contribution to Uganda’s music industry. He was a founding member and longtime leader of Afrigo Band, one of the country’s longest-running music groups, with a career spanning several decades.

Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, died at the age of 77 on September 24, 2026, after sustaining fatal injuries during an early-morning confrontation in Kibuli. Police subsequently opened a murder investigation, with suspects later arrested and charged in connection with the death.

The proposed government intervention adds to efforts to recognise Matovu’s contribution and preserve the legacy of a musician whose career was closely associated with the growth of Uganda’s modern entertainment industry.
