Bus drivers across Uganda are threatening a nationwide sit-down strike starting Monday, October 12, 2026, in protest against what they describe as unfair and costly regulations imposed by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

In a notice dated October 8, the United Bus Drivers Association (UBDA) informed the public that its members intend to temporarily withdraw their services until their concerns are addressed.

The association says drivers are struggling to meet the financial demands of regulatory requirements, including annual driver badge renewals, refresher training and other compliance-related expenses.

According to UBDA, the costs are becoming increasingly difficult to manage given the salaries earned by many drivers, raising concerns about their ability to comply with the regulations while meeting their daily financial obligations.

The planned industrial action is intended to pressure the government to review the requirements and address the grievances raised by drivers.

UBDA has described the strike as a peaceful protest and urged members of the public to prepare for possible transport disruptions from Monday if the planned action proceeds.

The protest comes amid wider government efforts to tighten regulation of public transport, including driver accreditation, vehicle inspections and route management, with authorities citing road safety concerns. The Ministry of Works and Transport has previously held engagements with driver associations and transport operators over compliance challenges and working conditions.

It remains unclear whether the ministry will meet UBDA representatives or introduce any changes before the proposed strike begins.

If implemented nationwide, the withdrawal of bus services could disrupt travel for passengers who depend on buses for work, education and journeys between districts.
