The Guild Presidential race at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) took an unexpected turn as Juma Wasswa Balunywa, son of former MUBS Principal Prof Wasswa Balunywa Sr, was disqualified from the race and subsequently arrested.
The disqualification, allegedly due to academic reasons, came as a shock to many, especially considering Juma’s prominent position as a contender in the race. However, whispers of foul play emerged as cryptic messages shared by his father hinted at underlying issues.
According to preliminary sources, Prof Balunywa Sr, in a social media post (screenshot attached below), pointed fingers at the current Ag Principal Prof Muhwezi for his son’s sudden exit from the race. The post hinted at possible interference or unjust treatment that led to Juma’s disqualification.
Adding fuel to the fire, further investigation into Prof Balunywa Sr’s social media activity revealed an endorsement of a ‘FreeJWB’ campaign, suggesting a growing movement to protest Juma’s disqualification and demand justice for the aspiring candidate.
Juma Wasswa Balunywa’s disqualification did not go unnoticed by his supporters, who swiftly rallied behind him, both online and offline. The ‘FreeJWB’ campaign gained traction among netizens and supporters, with calls for transparency and fairness in the electoral process at MUBS.

Juma, who was considered a front-runner in the Guild Presidential race, faced uncertainty regarding his eligibility after concerns were raised about a retake in computing mathematics during his second year of study. These concerns seemingly culminated in his disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC) today.
The announcement by the EC, excluding Juma Wasswa Balunywa from the list of eligible candidates, further fueled the controversy surrounding the MUBS Guild elections. The campus is now abuzz with discussions about fairness, academic integrity, and the role of authorities in student elections.
In a surprising turn of events, following his disqualification, Juma Wasswa Balunywa was reportedly arrested on undisclosed charges. This development has added a new layer of complexity to an already tumultuous situation at MUBS.
As the university community grapples with these developments, questions linger about the transparency of the electoral process, the role of academic performance in student leadership, and the rights of candidates to fair treatment.
