National Standards Council chairperson James Kalibala has been put on oath before Parliament’s Committee on Trade as MPs investigate concerns surrounding his academic qualifications and possible conflict of interest.

Kalibala was sworn in before the committee chaired by Hon. Boniface Okot following questions about his credentials and suitability to lead the council.

The committee raised concerns over allegations that Kalibala has presented himself as an engineer despite claims that he does not hold the relevant engineering qualifications.

MPs also questioned his previous leadership roles at organisations that fall under the regulatory mandate of the National Standards Council, raising concerns about a possible conflict of interest.

Following the session, the Committee on Trade directed all members of the National Standards Council to submit their academic certificates and curriculum vitae for verification.

The documents will help Parliament establish whether the council’s leadership meets the required professional and legal standards and address concerns surrounding potential conflicts of interest.

The scrutiny comes as Parliament continues examining the leadership and operations of institutions responsible for enforcing standards and protecting consumers.
