Position : Drug Safety Surveillance Officer

Organization: Akros Research

Background:
Akros Research is supporting a program funded by the Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with the Africa CDC, aimed at increasing vaccine uptake in Africa through the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative. As part of this consortium, Akros Research will assist Africa Union member states in Eastern and Southern Africa to enhance vaccine safety surveillance systems.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Engage proactively in vaccination activities and implement innovative methods to screen, detect, assess, and follow up with individuals regarding suspected adverse drug events.
  2. Receive and log calls through the toll-free portal into adverse event reporting forms.
  3. Monitor and coordinate data entry of suspected adverse events from vaccinations into national electronic databases.
  4. Analyze and interpret drug safety concerns, providing professional guidance as needed.
  5. Follow up on safety concerns from call centers, including the MOH call center, and make referrals for clinical care.
  6. Communicate effectively about the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative through proactive monitoring and reporting of adverse events.
  7. Follow up on AEFI cases reported through the weekly DHIS2 and coordinate with district surveillance focal persons for case reporting and resolution.
  8. Prepare and share regular status updates and reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual).
  9. Perform any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, MBChB, or a relevant medical field.
  • 2-5 years of progressive experience in program management.
  • Strong experience working with Ministries of Health, regulatory authorities, donors, and managing emergency responses.
  • Experience in pharmacovigilance activities is an advantage.

Skills:

  • Proven ability to manage activities with limited resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of vaccine safety surveillance.
  • Technical writing, quantitative, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and independent work skills.

Reporting:
Reports to the Akros Country Manager, with a dotted reporting line to the Extended Program of Immunization (MOH) and the National Drug Authority.

Position : Data Entry Clerk

Location: Kampala, Uganda
Duration: 12 months
Term: Open to Ugandan nationals only

Background:
Akros Research is collaborating on the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative to enhance vaccine safety surveillance systems. The Data Entry Clerk will support the Uganda National Drug Authority (NDA) in clearing data backlogs and maintaining effective record keeping.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Review DHIS2 weekly and monthly case reports; follow up with district surveillance focal persons for verification.
  2. Obtain follow-up information on cases reported through various platforms including call centers and SMS codes.
  3. Update the annual AEFI line list and share with MoH counterparts.
  4. Analyze the line list to identify cases requiring detailed investigation.
  5. Enter data from AEFI paper formats into Vigi-flow systems at NDA.
  6. Identify and correct data entry errors using quality control methods.
  7. Organize records and files, ensuring completeness for causality assessment.
  8. Communicate regularly with Ministry of Health and NDA counterparts.
  9. Document and update all forms and records.
  10. Prepare reports and provide general data entry support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, MBChB, or a relevant field.
  • 2 years of data entry experience.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of word processing tools and databases.
  • Ability to work against challenging deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Skills:

  • Strong data entry and error correction abilities.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to different situations.
  • Culturally adaptable and sensitive.

Reporting:
Reports to the Akros Country Manager, with a dotted reporting line to the Pharmacovigilance Coordinator at the Uganda National Drug Authority.
