Summary: Climate Smart Jobs (CSJ) is seeking a skilled consultant to develop a Human-Centered Design Thinking Manual and train Master Trainers. This role supports Component 1B of our four-year program funded by the UK’s International Climate Fund, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and resilience for smallholder farmers in Uganda.

About Climate Smart Jobs (CSJ): CSJ’s Component 1 seeks to address the challenges faced by smallholder farmers (SHFs), including limited access to resources and market inefficiencies. Our mission is to facilitate access to quality inputs and services to increase productivity and income while adapting to climate change impacts.

Assignment Background: Component 1B of CSJ, delivering the Uganda Climate Innovation Fund (UCIF), focuses on empowering market actors to implement innovative climate-smart solutions. This involves providing technical assistance to business owners to enhance their skills and enable them to secure funding and scale their ventures.

Objective of the Assignment: The consultant will develop a comprehensive Human-Centered Design Thinking Manual and train Master Trainers to effectively use this manual. The goal is to foster innovation, improve problem-solving, and enhance the impact of climate-smart solutions through a design thinking approach.

Scope of Work:

1. Develop a Design Thinking Manual:

• Conduct a literature review on Design Thinking frameworks and methodologies.
• Analyze existing bootcamp materials for UCIF.
• Create a detailed manual covering the Design Thinking process (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test).
• Include practical tools, techniques, and industry-relevant case studies.
• Customize the manual to meet the needs of the Incubator.
• Present the draft manual for feedback and finalize it.

2. Train Master Trainers:

• Develop and deliver a training program for Master Trainers, incorporating lectures, discussions, and hands-on exercises.
• Ensure Master Trainers gain the skills to conduct Design Thinking workshops and adapt the methodology to various projects.
• Cover key topics such as Design Thinking principles, workshop facilitation, and outcome evaluation.

Deliverables:

1. Inception Report outlining methodology and approach.
2. Draft Design Thinking Manual.
3. Final Design Thinking Manual.
4. Master Trainers’ training program and materials.
5. List of qualified Master Trainers.

Assignment Background: Component 1B of CSJ collaborates with SBIL to provide comprehensive technical assistance to business pioneers, aiding their progression from idea generation to achieving product-market fit.

Objective of the Assignment: The consultant will develop a detailed Business Incubation Framework and Guide to support SBIL’s incubation program, helping start-ups advance from ideation to market-ready ventures.

Scope of Work:

1. Develop Business Incubation Framework:

• Review existing literature and best practices in business incubation.
• Design a framework outlining key components, processes, and best practices.
• Include criteria for selecting and supporting incubate businesses, and mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation.

2. Create Detailed Guide:

• Develop practical guidance, templates, and tools for implementing the Business Incubation Framework.
• Provide step-by-step instructions for incubator managers and stakeholders.

Deliverables:

1. Inception Report detailing the approach and methodology.
2. Draft Business Incubation Framework and Guide.
3. Final Business Incubation Framework and Guide incorporating feedback.

Reporting: The consultant will report to the Team Leader with support from the Manager, Programmes, and Business Incubation Specialist at SBIL.
