UPDF spokesperson Col. Chris Magezi has strongly dismissed allegations against Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba published in The New York Times, branding exiled Ugandan novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija a “fiction teller” and questioning his account.

The allegations appeared in an October 8, 2026, article by American journalist Megan K. Stack. Kakwenza reportedly described humiliating treatment during detention and alleged that Muhoozi later offered him money to remain silent about the abuse. The UPDF has denied the claims, with Magezi insisting that Muhoozi has never met Kakwenza.

Magezi questioned what he described as contradictions in Kakwenza’s account, particularly claims that his ankles were fractured and that standing was difficult, alongside an alleged order to bend over.

He also accused Western media of targeting Muhoozi and portrayed the report as part of a broader campaign to discredit the army chief. Magezi defended Muhoozi’s military record and called for respect for Uganda’s institutions, warning against what he described as foreign interference in the country’s affairs.

The exchange marks another public confrontation over allegations against Uganda’s top military leadership. However, Magezi’s statement represents the UPDF’s position, while the allegations and denials remain disputed.
