Communications Officer – Uganda Rugby Union

Job Purpose: The primary role of the Communications Officer is to nurture a strong media industry network, increase awareness, and develop an enviable corporate image for URU by developing and executing effective communication and media relations programs and a 360-degree communications and content plan.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a marketing communications plan including strategy, goals, budget, and tactics.
  • Develop a media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Coordinate all public relations activities.
  • Direct the social media team to engage the audience across traditional and new media.
  • Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within the broader Rugby fraternity.
  • Keep an eye on the latest social media trends.
  • Develop and lead the execution of a content plan across various social media channels.
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests.
  • Strengthen relationships with all media personnel.
  • Create content for press releases, byline articles, and keynote presentations.
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate PR results on a quarterly basis.
  • Evaluate opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships, and advertising on an ongoing basis.
  • Analyze campaign data and web traffic metrics.
  • Build relationships with thought leaders to raise industry awareness.

Academic Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Advertising, or a related discipline.

Additional Qualifications: Desirable:

  • Postgraduate/Certificate in Communication-related field.

Experience: Essential:

  • A minimum of 1 year in a busy Public Relations and Communication environment. Desirable:
  • 2 years or more hands-on experience in a paid or voluntary capacity.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and can delegate effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong planning ability with excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of normal hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to manage a group of participants effectively.
  • Proven working experience in public relations required.
  • Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns at both a local and national level.
  • Strong relationships with both local and national federations, Government, and industry media outlets.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Solid experience with social media, including blogs, Facebook, and other platforms.
  • Event planning experience.
