Shortage of CondoMs in the Country Raise Tensions as New Fears for HIV Call for Urgent Government Action

The Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organisations (UNASO) has urged the government to urgently address the growing shortage of condoms, warning that the crisis could undermine the country’s fight against HIV/AIDS.

The appeal was made after persons living with HIV/AIDS appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on HIV/AIDS and revealed that the shortage is already affecting prevention efforts across the country.

In addition to the shortage, they raised concerns about the size of condoms currently being distributed. According to the group, many users have complained that the condoms are too small, making them uncomfortable to use.

They warned that the issue is discouraging consistent condom use, increasing the risk of HIV transmission and threatening Uganda’s progress in combating the epidemic.

Stakeholders are now calling on the government to act swiftly by restoring adequate condom supplies and ensuring that the products distributed meet the needs of users.

A shortage of condoms in Uganda has sparked fresh concern among HIV/AIDS stakeholders, with the Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organisations (UNASO) calling on the government to urgently intervene.

The concern was raised by persons living with HIV/AIDS while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on HIV/AIDS. They warned that the shortage is weakening HIV prevention efforts and could lead to a rise in new infections if not addressed quickly.

The group also highlighted another unexpected challenge—the size of the condoms being distributed.

According to their testimony, many users have complained that the condoms are too small, making them uncomfortable to use. They warned that this has discouraged proper and consistent condom use, a key tool in preventing the spread of HIV.

UNASO is now urging the government to ensure a steady supply of condoms and improve the quality and sizing of those distributed to better meet users’ needs as Uganda continues its fight against HIV/AIDS.
