Multichoice, the cable platform owners of DSTV, have announced that they won’t be airing the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Supersport due to their failure to secure broadcasting rights for the tournament.
The 2023 AFCON tournaments are set to commence on January 13, 2024, in Ivory Coast.
In an official statement, Multichoice confirmed that AFCON 2023 won’t be broadcast on Supersport, citing the inability to secure rights for the event.
However, they assured fans that the tournament would still be available through their partner broadcast stations on Free to Air.
While AFCON 2023 won’t be featured on Supersport, Multichoice assured viewers that other football games from leagues such as the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Zambian Super League will continue to be aired on Supersport.
The statement from Multichoice emphasized, “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.”
Despite this unexpected move, Multichoice remains committed to providing football fans with access to entertainment and football games on their DStv and GOtv platforms.
The decision has left many football enthusiasts puzzled, wondering why their favorite channel won’t be showcasing the 34th edition of AFCON
