Restless Development is a global non-profit agency dedicated to supporting the collective power of young leaders to create a better world. Independently registered and governed in nine countries, including Uganda, we empower young people to tackle the issues they care about most. Through youth-led programs and the Youth Collective network, we strive to shift power dynamics and create positive change both locally and globally.

Job Title: Girl Champion (Volunteer Role)

Location: Jinja City, Moroto, Napak, Jinja, and Mayuge Districts (30 positions)

Stipend: Modest monthly stipend depending on level of engagement

Preferred Start Date: May 2024

Length of Contract: 12 Months

Reports to: Programme Officer

Expected Travel: Occasional domestic travels may be required

Job Description:

We are seeking dynamic, committed, and passionate girls to join Restless Development as Girl Champions. As a Girl Champion, you will be based in Project Implementation Districts where your skills will be enhanced in various areas including girl-led research methodology, green entrepreneurship, climate activism, digital advocacy, and story-telling, among others. You will have the opportunity to mentor fellow girls in your community and gain exposure through participation in national, regional, and global platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in girl-led research & needs assessment training.
  • Engage in training on green entrepreneurship, career skills, climate activism, advocacy, story-telling, and organizing.
  • Co-lead an inclusive girl-led needs assessment and evidence-building process.
  • Conduct community dialogues on gender norms affecting girls’ contributions to climate solutions.
  • Lead the development of climate action plans and co-create climate innovations.
  • Facilitate peer support groups and mentorship sessions.
  • Co-create a Global Girls Climate Manifesto and voice it at national and international climate events.
  • Participate in community-level coalitions to engage in and influence national networks.
  • Ensure the safety of fellow Girl Champions and community members.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Aged between 18-24 years old.
  • Passionate about youth development and the role of young people in decision-making.
  • Completed at least O-level education, current student, or equivalent work experience in youth engagement.
  • Current resident of Jinja City, Jinja, Napak, Moroto, or Mayuge districts.
  • Fluent in English and the local language of your district.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Capacity to commit to the program from start to finish.
  • Passionate about climate justice, advocacy, and community engagement.
  • Expertise or experience in climate change, climate justice, or advocacy work.
