Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth has opened up about how the Karamoja iron sheets scandal nearly ruined his political career, describing the receipt of 300 iron sheets as one of his most embarrassing experiences.
“As a survivor of the iron sheet scandal, if there is anything embarrassing that has ever happened to me, it is when I was given 300 iron sheets, which I didn’t ask for,” Oboth said.
The scandal involved the distribution of iron sheets intended for vulnerable communities in Karamoja to several government officials and other recipients, sparking public outrage and investigations.
Oboth said opposition figures, including Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi, repeatedly used the controversy to challenge him and other officials whose names emerged during the scandal.
He made the remarks while warning MPs against requesting specific quantities of government materials without technical justification, such as bills of quantities.
Oboth cautioned that failing to follow proper procedures when seeking public supplies could expose leaders to similar controversies.
The iron sheets scandal remains a sensitive issue in Uganda’s public accountability debate, with several officials facing scrutiny over the distribution of relief materials meant for vulnerable communities.
