The candidacy of social media sensation Juma Wasswa Balunywa for the Guild Presidency of MUBS 2024 hangs in the balance due to alleged academic issues.

Reports circulating within the MUBS community suggest that Balunywa may face disqualification from the Guild race due to having two retakes on his academic record. This revelation has stirred controversy, with concerns raised about the interference of academic matters in student elections.

A concerned member of Balunywa’s camp penned a letter to the acting MUBS Principal, Prof. Muhwezi, expressing grievances over the handling of Balunywa’s academic standing in relation to his candidacy. The letter highlighted the perceived bias of the management towards Balunywa’s camp and questioned the involvement of the Academic Board in matters pertaining to student elections.

“It is unprecedented for student elections to fall under the jurisdiction of the Academic Board,” the letter stated. “The Academic Board’s mandate is confined to academic affairs such as teaching, timetabling, and examination results.”

The letter further accused the Principal of taking sides in the elections by prematurely disclosing Balunywa’s academic status, potentially influencing his eligibility for the Guild Presidency. Concerns were also raised about the alleged use of forged documents by staff members to discredit Balunywa’s candidacy.

“We demand transparency and impartiality in the handling of student elections,” the letter emphasized. “The management must refrain from undue interference and ensure that the electoral process remains fair and free from external influence.”

In response to these allegations, the MUBS administration has yet to issue an official statement. However, it is expected that the matter will be thoroughly investigated to address the concerns raised by the students.

The upcoming days are crucial for Balunywa’s candidacy as the MUBS community awaits clarification on the validity of his nomination. The outcome of this controversy will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the Guild elections and determine the future leadership of MUBS
