The government has started weighbridge operations on the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, with all vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes and above now required to undergo mandatory weighing.

The enforcement began on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, following a directive from the Ministry of Works and Transport under Minister of State for Transport and Works Fred Byamukama.

The new measure targets overloaded vehicles and trucks as authorities move to enforce prescribed axle-load and gross-weight limits on the expressway.

The Ministry says the operation is aimed at protecting the road infrastructure from damage caused by overloading, improving road safety and extending the lifespan of the expressway.

Under Uganda’s 2026 vehicle load control regulations, the rules apply to vehicles with an unladen gross weight of 3.5 tonnes or more, while drivers are required to submit their vehicles for weighing when directed by an authorised officer.

Vehicles found to be overloaded can face applicable overloading fees and other enforcement measures, including detention until the required fees are paid and the excess load is removed or redistributed.

The commencement of the weighbridge operations follows an earlier temporary restriction on heavy commercial vehicles weighing 7,500kg and above, which the Ministry introduced in August as work continued on weighing and load-verification facilities on the expressway.

Authorities say the latest enforcement is intended to ensure motorists and transport operators comply with legal load limits while protecting one of Uganda’s key transport corridors.

The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway already provides overload-control services, with its weighbridge system designed to determine the weight of goods being carried and the load on individual axles.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has urged road users and transporters to comply with the new requirements as government steps up efforts to protect Uganda’s road infrastructure and improve safety.
