Afrigo Band will continue performing despite the death of its longtime leader and founding member Moses Matovu, with management confirming that all existing bookings will be honoured.
Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, died on September 24, 2026, aged 77, after an attack in Kibuli. He had spent decades at the centre of Afrigo’s journey and remained one of the band’s defining figures until his death.
His death raised questions about the future of the legendary band, particularly given Matovu’s role as its leader, saxophonist, vocalist and composer for decades.
However, in a statement issued by Afrigo management, the group assured clients, fans and the public that the band remains intact and will continue performing.
“All bookings shall be honoured. The band remains intact and committed to delivering the quality performance that Afrigo is known for.”
Management also urged supporters not to lose heart, pointing to the foundation Matovu built over more than five decades.
“Do not lose heart. Moses Matovu laid a solid foundation for over 50 years. The discipline, talent, and values he instilled in the band remain intact and will continue.”
Matovu was one of the musicians behind the formation of Afrigo in the mid-1970s. The band went on to become one of Uganda’s longest-running live music groups and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.
His death marked the end of a major chapter in Afrigo’s history, but management says the musical institution he helped build will continue operating in his honour.
“The Afrigo Band will continue to live on in his honour,” management said.
