Just days after the death and burial of Ugandan music legend Moses Matovu alias Papa Moi, a young man claiming to be his son has come forward with an emotional account that has sparked fresh questions about the late saxophonist’s family.
In a video circulating online, the young man claims that his mother is currently in Saudi Arabia and that he has been raised by his uncle.
He also expresses disappointment over what he describes as a lack of recognition from Matovu’s relatives during the funeral preparations and public mourning following the legendary musician’s death.
The emotional claims come shortly after Matovu, the longtime Afrigo Band leader and one of Uganda’s most celebrated saxophonists, was laid to rest in Kyanja on Friday, September 25.
Matovu died on September 24 at the age of 77 after sustaining serious injuries during an attack in Kibuli. Police subsequently opened an investigation into his death, with the circumstances surrounding the incident still under investigation.
The young man’s claim of being Matovu’s son, as well as his account of the family’s response to him, has not been independently verified.
It is therefore unclear whether he is biologically related to the late musician or whether any formal acknowledgement of his claimed relationship exists.
The development adds another layer to the public conversation surrounding Matovu’s family following the veteran musician’s death, as fans continue to mourn the Afrigo icon and reflect on his nearly six-decade contribution to Uganda’s music industry.
