The political and musical arenas in Uganda collided once again as National Unity Platform (NUP) President and musician, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, took a jab at fellow musicians during a media address at the NUP party headquarters.
Bobi Wine directed his criticism toward musicians associated with the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), claiming that they are set to receive a staggering Ugx 30 billion from the government. While the Ministry of Finance and Planning had requested a supplementary budget of Ugx 13 billion, Bobi Wine exaggerated the figure, suggesting it was equivalent to the construction cost of a hospital comparable to Kiruddu Hospital.
“Musicians are going to eat an entire hospital,” remarked Bobi Wine, expressing his disapproval of the alleged funding for the UNMF. The Federation, formed earlier this year, aims to streamline the music industry and address utility needs at their offices in Allure Suites, Mutundwe. Eddy Kenzo was appointed as the acting president, with deputies Sheebah Karungi, Pallaso, and Juliana Kanyomozi (who later resigned due to personal responsibilities).
Critics, particularly those aligned with the opposition party NUP and media analysts, have raised concerns about UNMF’s financial ties with the government. However, Kenzo has consistently denied allegations of seeking money from the government, emphasizing that the Federation’s primary goal is to enhance the music industry.
