Electoral Commission Chairperson Simon Byabakama has criticized police for failing to enforce a ban on vehicles without number plates during campaign activities in the Kalangala Woman MP by-election, raising concerns over compliance with electoral guidelines.
Byabakama expressed concern that despite clear directives prohibiting the use of unmarked vehicles in election operations, such vehicles were still being used during the voting period. He urged security agencies to take immediate action to ensure full enforcement of electoral laws and maintain order throughout the process.
He also appealed to residents of Kalangala to remain peaceful and adhere to electoral regulations as the country conducted the closely watched by-election.
The June 24, 2026 Kalangala Woman MP by-election was won by Idah Nabayiga of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who secured 12,642 votes.
She defeated Irene Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who garnered 7,474 votes, along with three other candidates who registered minimal support.
The Electoral Commission emphasized the importance of strict adherence to electoral procedures, noting that enforcement gaps could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Byabakama reiterated that all stakeholders, including security agencies, must work together to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections across the country.
