The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda (COU), Dr. Steven Kazimba Mugalu, has announced the discontinuation of his initiative to recognize and reward women who enter matrimony as virgins, stating that they have become increasingly rare to find.
The initiative, initiated years ago when Kazimba served as the Bishop of Mityana Diocese, aimed to acknowledge women who maintained Arch Kazimba Gives Up Search For Virgins, Says they’re rare to findtheir virginity until marriage. As part of the program, the Archbishop pledged cash rewards to school-going girls who could prove their virginity through assessments conducted by a team of born-again women with expertise in the matter.
During a Christmas songs performance at the Vision Group headquarters, Kazimba disclosed his decision to terminate the initiative. “I closed the initiative because finding women and girls who are virgins was challenging,” he stated candidly.
The Archbishop went on to highlight that in the past, men used to express their gratitude for marrying a virgin by giving goats to the woman’s family. However, he noted a shift in contemporary times, remarking, “Nowadays, men don’t give out goats because virgins are rare.”
Addressing a related issue, Kazimba issued a warning concerning men who subject children to DNA tests. He urged them to emulate the biblical figure Joseph, who accepted the baby (Jesus) even though his wife Mary was a virgin. The Archbishop emphasized the importance of trust and understanding within relationships, invoking a biblical reference to convey his message.
The decision to discontinue the initiative has sparked discussions about societal changes and perceptions surrounding virginity. While some applaud the move as a recognition of shifting norms, others question the underlying assumptions and practices associated with such initiatives. Archbishop Kazimba’s stance adds a new chapter to the ongoing discourse on changing attitudes towards traditional values in contemporary society.
