Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze has raised concerns in Parliament over a social media post by Busiro South MP Kenan Opio, warning that his remarks about Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi could raise safety concerns.

Nambooze, who chairs the National Unity Platform (NUP) Parliamentary Caucus, raised the matter during Wednesday’s parliamentary sitting on October 28, 2026, following Opio’s declaration that his dispute with Ssenyonyi remained unresolved.

“I rise with authority, it is ‘NOT’ over between me and Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi. NUP has been the train wreck,” Opio wrote on X, criticising NUP while insisting that his differences with Ssenyonyi were far from settled.

The controversy comes amid political tensions surrounding the Busiro South parliamentary seat, which Opio won in the 2026 general elections. His predecessor, former NUP MP Charles Matovu, died on October 22 after challenging the election results in court. The petition ended following his death without a ruling on the alleged irregularities.

During her address, Nambooze also referred to earlier guidance from Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who had proposed establishing a committee to help MPs resolve disagreements through dialogue and reconciliation.

Her intervention places Opio’s remarks under parliamentary scrutiny, although the specific nature of the safety concerns remains unclear. The development adds to tensions between NUP and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
