A yet-to-be-identified boda boda rider was reportedly shot dead by a police officer during Uganda’s second National Cleaning Day exercise on Saturday morning.
According to preliminary reports, the rider allegedly got into an altercation with the officer after reportedly refusing to take part in the nationwide cleaning exercise.
The exact circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear, with details of what happened before the fatal incident still emerging.
National Cleaning Day is held on the last Saturday of every month from 7:00am to 10:00am, with restrictions on movement introduced to encourage public participation in community cleaning activities. Medical emergencies, security personnel and other essential travel are among the exemptions.
The reported shooting is now likely to trigger fresh questions about how the restrictions are being enforced and the conduct of security personnel during the exercise.
Authorities had not issued an official statement confirming the shooting by the time of publication.
