Kilak South MP Gilbert Olanya has given the government 14 days to address rising fuel and food prices, warning that failure to act could trigger public unrest.
Olanya raised the concerns during a parliamentary debate on Uganda’s economic situation, saying ordinary Ugandans are struggling to cope with the increasing cost of basic necessities.
He noted that rising fuel prices have pushed up transportation costs, forcing businesses to increase prices for goods and services.
Fuel prices have reportedly reached between Shs6,800 and Shs10,000 per litre in some areas, while essential food items such as matooke and beans have also become more expensive.
The price increases have been linked to the depreciation of the shilling, higher international oil prices and domestic supply pressures.
Several MPs have called for government intervention, including possible reductions in petroleum taxes and measures to stabilise the local currency.
The concerns come as Uganda’s headline inflation reached 4.6% in September 2026, adding to pressure on households and businesses.
