Armed assailants reportedly raided Kyegegwa Government Prison in Western Uganda at around 1:00am on August 14, 2026, overpowering night-duty officers and escaping with two firearms.
According to Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine, three officers were injured during the attempted break-in. They are Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus, Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret and Warder Odongo Joshua, who were taken to hospital for treatment.
The attackers reportedly made off with two registered firearms, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
Despite the incident, no inmates escaped from the prison.
Security agencies have since been alerted as investigations continue to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
