Dr. Kizza Besigye has reportedly been transferred from Mulago Hospital back to Luzira Prison, hours after Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi visited him, forcing his wife Winnie Byanyima to raise concerns over his medical condition.

Byanyima said Besigye was still unable to walk or speak when she left him at around 4:30pm, adding that she had to feed him with a spoon because his hands and arms remained weak.

She questioned the decision to return him to Luzira, saying a previous meeting involving prison officials and doctors had raised concerns about whether the facility could adequately support his rehabilitation.

According to Byanyima, Besigye was taken from Mulago after 7pm, despite the concerns about his condition. She described the transfer as cruel and questioned who ordered it.

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has also called for Besigye to be evacuated abroad for specialised treatment, arguing that he requires further medical care.

The transfer came hours after Baryomunsi said he had visited Besigye at Mulago and found him steadily recuperating.” The minister has maintained that his visit was a personal gesture of concern and was separate from the decision regarding Besigye’s discharge.

Besigye, 70, was taken to Mulago after collapsing in court on July 29, 2026, during his treason case. His health has since remained a major concern for his family and supporters.
