Businessman and activist Frank Gashumba has alleged that an attempt was made to use Shs1.5 billion to influence ministerial appointments and secure representation for Banyarwanda in Uganda.
Gashumba, who leads the Abavandimwe group, made the claims in recent statements circulating on social media, where he discussed what he described as negotiations surrounding high-level government appointments.
He further claimed that President Yoweri Museveni is aware of the alleged scheme, although he did not publicly provide detailed evidence or identify specific individuals allegedly involved.
The claims come amid renewed discussions about the political representation of Banyarwanda in Uganda, following the controversy surrounding the nomination of Dr. Lawrence Muganga for a ministerial position.
Muganga’s nomination was rejected by Parliament’s Appointments Committee amid questions over his citizenship status. Gashumba had previously been vocal about the matter and supported Muganga during the controversy.
Gashumba has for years spoken publicly about issues affecting Banyarwanda in Uganda, including political participation, access to national identification documents and other citizenship-related concerns.
However, the latest Shs1.5 billion bribery allegation has not been independently verified. The claims have so far mainly circulated through social media videos and posts, with no widely reported official investigation or response confirming that the alleged bribery attempt took place.
It is therefore unclear whether any money was offered or exchanged, who may have been involved, or whether authorities have opened an investigation into the claims.
