On Saturday, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, tied the knot with his beloved Beatrice Nyanzi, marking a significant chapter in their widely publicized relationship.
The couple exchanged vows at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Gulu, followed by a grand reception in Mao’s home district. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, and his wife, Anita Rukundo.
In a heartfelt and humorous speech, Minister Mao defended his decision to remarry, likening marriage to school: “Marriage is like school; you can drop out and enroll again.” His remarks drew laughter and applause from the guests, as he emphasized the importance of seeking happiness and peace in relationships. Mao argued that individuals in unhappy marriages should feel free to pursue new relationships that bring them joy, rather than living dishonestly.
Mao’s previous marriage to Naomi Achieng Adong ended in divorce in 2019 after 16 years and three children. The marriage was dissolved by Justice Godfrey Namundi, who stated that it was “irretrievably broken down.” Similarly, Beatrice Nyanzi also divorced her husband, Martin Kayanja, leaving him and their children in London. The couple began their relationship around 2020, despite initially denying any romantic involvement.
The wedding celebration, filled with joy and camaraderie, was a testament to Mao’s belief in standing up for love. He encouraged others to seek happiness and not to remain in unfulfilling marriages due to societal or religious pressures. His remarks resonated with many, highlighting the evolving perspectives on marriage and personal happiness.
