Pastor Aloysious Bugingo has shared the heartbreaking story of his bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza, describing him as a hero who sacrificed his life for the pastor’s safety.
Bugingo, speaking from his residence in Namayumba, Wakiso district, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “He (Muhumuza) was a brother who gave his life for me to live.”
The pastor recounted the tragic incident on January 2, 2024, when Muhumuza, in his mid-thirties, was fatally shot during an attack on the vehicle they were traveling in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb.
Bugingo revealed that Muhumuza had long declared his commitment, saying, “If Pastor were to be shot, I would take in more bullets, and he (Bugingo) would live to serve the people of God.”
Describing the attack, Bugingo explained, “We were chatting in the car when Satan attacked. The attackers hit the car from the side where he was seated.” He further disclosed being lightly wounded and hearing God’s voice instructing him to go to Mulago Hospital. Tragically, after 30 minutes of surgery, Bugingo learned of Muhumuza’s death due to extensive blood loss.
Ugandans have called for a thorough investigation into Muhumuza’s death, complicated by Bugingo driving the vehicle from the scene.
Despite the pain, Bugingo emphasized Muhumuza’s heroism, stating, “I lost the most important thing in my life. I lost someone who was irreplaceable.”
Promising to care for the deceased’s family, Bugingo declared, “I will do his (Muhumuza) assignment of serving God until my last breath. He gave me a second chance that you can’t joke with.”
Muhumuza, survived by children, will be laid to rest on Friday afternoon, with mourners deeply moved as his casket arrived at his ancestral home.
