Former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has changed his position on Bobi Wine’s decision to leave Uganda, saying the opposition leader was “very right to go” amid the growing pressure on opposition figures.
Ssemujju, who is currently in exile, said he initially believed Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, should have remained in Uganda and continued with the political struggle following the January 2026 elections.
However, he said the developments involving opposition leaders have since changed his view.
“When Bobi Wine left the country, in my thinking I thought he would have stayed and fought. But my thinking right now has changed. He was very right to go,” Ssemujju said.
Bobi Wine reportedly remained in hiding for several weeks after the January elections before eventually leaving Uganda, citing security concerns.
Ssemujju’s comments come as several opposition figures continue to face arrests and legal proceedings, including Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is facing treason-related charges.
The former legislator’s change of position highlights the difficult choices facing opposition leaders between remaining active in Uganda and seeking safety outside the country.
For Ssemujju, leaving the country does not necessarily mean abandoning the political struggle, but can instead provide an opportunity to continue political activities while prioritising personal safety.
