Fresh concerns have emerged over the treatment of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago while in detention, after his lawyer, Medard Sseggona, alleged that his client was subjected to harsh conditions that worsened his health.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Mankidye Magistrate’s Court, Sseggona claimed that Lukwago was forcibly shaved using an unsanitized machine and was fed posho and beans despite having a medically prescribed diet.
According to Sseggona, the food provided to Lukwago aggravated his condition, raising concerns about his access to appropriate healthcare while in custody.
Lukwago, a prominent opposition leader and defense lawyer for Dr. Kizza Besigye in an ongoing treason case, was arrested by security operatives at his home on June 15, 2026. He was later charged with misprision of treason before being presented in court.
The allegations have intensified debate over the treatment of detainees in Uganda, particularly regarding access to family members, legal counsel, and medical care. Questions have also been raised about Lukwago’s initial detention in an undisclosed location before his court appearance.
Authorities have not publicly responded to the allegations raised by Sseggona.
