Two government officials have been arrested by Parliament CID officers following a heated interrogation by the Infrastructure Committee over the Shs714,300 price of Uganda’s digital number plates.

Nathan Negesa, a public officer attached to the Office of the President, was arrested after failing to provide the committee with a clear explanation for the price attached to a digital number plate.

The committee was presented with a cost breakdown reportedly totalling Shs624,000, leaving a difference of Shs90,300 that officials could not immediately account for.

Finance Ministry official Moses Bekabye was also arrested during the proceedings.

Bekabye faced further scrutiny over his previous testimony to the committee, in which he reportedly said Ugandan officials had travelled to China, Russia and India to benchmark the cost of digital number plates.

However, during his appearance before the committee on Monday, Bekabye reportedly admitted that no such benchmarking trips had taken place, contradicting his earlier testimony.

The conflicting accounts have intensified Parliament’s investigation into how the Shs714,300 price of the digital number plates was determined.

The arrests come as lawmakers continue examining the procurement, costing and pricing of the controversial plates, with officials facing questions over accountability and the basis for the final price.
