Ministry of Works Opens Up About Claims of Suspending Digital Number Plates

The Ministry of Works and Transport has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the registration and issuance of digital number plates has been suspended.

In a public notice issued on July 5, 2026, the ministry described the claims as false and urged motorists to ignore the misinformation, emphasizing that the digital number plate registration exercise is continuing as scheduled.

The clarification comes amid growing public frustration over delays in receiving the new plates. Many motorists have taken to social media, saying they paid the required fees months ago but are still waiting for their number plates to be issued.

Others have also raised concerns about the cost of the exercise, with many citing the UGX 714,000 registration fee and questioning the slow pace of service delivery.

The digital number plate project, introduced under Uganda’s Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), is intended to strengthen vehicle security, improve traffic management, and enhance crime detection through advanced tracking technology.

However, the rollout has been affected by supply shortages and overwhelming demand, resulting in significant backlogs. In recent weeks, government officials have held meetings aimed at addressing the delays and accelerating the issuance of the digital number plates.

The Ministry has encouraged the public to rely only on official communication channels for updates and assured motorists that efforts are underway to improve service delivery and clear the existing backlog.
