Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Chairperson Mariam Wangadya has agreed to surrender an industrial generator allegedly purchased using commission funds as Parliament intensifies its probe into questionable procurement at the institution.
Wangadya made the commitment on Monday while appearing before Parliament’s COSASE, which is investigating alleged irregular procurement worth about Shs160 million.
The probe includes claims that two generators were procured and allocated for personal use. One of the generators has reportedly already been returned, while Wangadya said she was also ready to surrender the one in her possession.
COSASE is also investigating allegations that some UHRC funds were channelled through staff members’ personal accounts, raising questions about compliance with public finance and procurement regulations.
The scrutiny comes amid wider concerns over governance and financial management at the commission, just weeks after Wangadya’s reported resignation in July 2026 was rejected.
As the parliamentary probe continues, the decision to surrender the generator adds another twist to growing questions over how public funds were used at the UHRC.
