Masaka City Woman MP and State Minister for Local Government, Hon. Justine Nameere, has publicly declined to campaign for NRM flag bearer Nabayiga Idah in the upcoming Kalangala District Woman MP by-election, citing respect for the wishes of the family of the late Woman MP, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli.
Speaking on the matter, Nameere apologized to the NRM candidate and explained that she could not bring herself to campaign against NUP candidate Irene Nampala, who was endorsed by Nakimuli’s family following the legislator’s death. Nampala is also the sister of the late Hellen Nakimuli.
According to Nameere, it would be inhumane to oppose a candidate who has received the blessing of the late MP’s family, especially when Nakimuli’s daughter has publicly appealed to the people of Kalangala to support Nampala.

The minister also shared a personal story, revealing that she lost her mother at a young age and understands the pain of growing up without a parent. She said this experience makes it difficult for her to disregard the wishes of Nakimuli’s children during such an emotional and sensitive period.
The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2026, following the death of Hon. Hellen Nakimuli.
Although five candidates are contesting for the seat, political observers say the main battle is between NUP’s Irene Nampala and NRM’s Nabayiga Idah.
Nameere’s decision has sparked debate within political circles, with some praising her for showing compassion and respect for the bereaved family, while others question her refusal to actively support her party’s candidate in one of the most closely watched by-elections in recent months.

As the election draws closer, her stance has added a new twist to an already highly contested race, raising questions about the balance between party loyalty and personal conviction in Ugandan politics.
