The morning unfolded typically for lawyer Raphael Okiot and his wife, Faith Irene Kwagala, a Grade One Magistrate in Kyenjojo District. They arose with buoyant spirits following a delightful dinner at their residence in Seeta, Mukono District, the previous evening.

Raphael Okiot, a practicing advocate and lecturer at Uganda Christian University (UCU), had a court appearance slated in Entebbe, around 50 kilometers away. Undeterred by the distance, Okiot was resolute in fulfilling his professional commitments.

Both set their alarms for 6 am, as recounted by his wife, to ensure Okiot’s punctuality. Opting out of breakfast, he was eager to proceed to court. Little did they anticipate, this would mark their final exchange.

Tragedy befell shortly after Okiot’s departure. Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage unveiled a harrowing accident involving a concrete mixer truck experiencing brake failure. The truck careened off course, toppling onto the road divider and crushing Okiot’s vehicle, acquired just four days earlier by the couple.

The accident site was fraught with chaos and desolation. Despite bystanders’ efforts, the weight of the cement mixer necessitated heavy machinery for rescue, rendering it an irreparable end to a life rich with promise.

News of Okiot’s premature demise elicited an outpouring of tributes from family, friends, colleagues, and students. He was commemorated as a magnanimous, brilliant, and affectionate individual who had profoundly impacted many lives.

Tonny Tumukunde, a confidant and colleague, extolled Okiot’s work ethic and familial dedication. Mike Muhereza, an associate at Okiot’s law firm, lauded his exceptional legal acumen and pedagogical prowess.

Barbra Namata, one of Okiot’s pupils at UCU, affectionately recalled his guidance and encouragement in academic pursuits. His sudden departure left an irreplaceable void for many.

Reflecting on their shared life, Faith Kwagala depicted Okiot as a devoted husband and loving father. Despite the tragedy, she cherished the memories forged during their 12-year matrimony.

Okiot’s legacy transcended familial and social circles. His scholarly accomplishments and contributions to the legal arena garnered admiration and esteem from peers and students alike.

As investigations into the accident persisted, inquiries arose concerning road safety and infrastructure. Grievances were voiced regarding deficient signage and speed regulation measures in accident-prone zones.

In the aftermath of Okiot’s demise, there arose a collective plea for enhanced emergency response services and road safety protocols. His passing underscored the fragility of life and the imperative for heightened vigilance on the roads.

While the community mourned the loss of a revered lawyer and educator, tributes continued to flood in, honoring Okiot’s memory and the indelible impression he left on those around him.
