Questions continue to surround the whereabouts of retired Lt Gen Peter Elwelu after reports that he disappeared from public view before Uganda’s January 2026 general elections, amid an escalating dispute with Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Accounts from Elwelu’s home area in Anyara Sub-county, Kalaki District, indicate that he reportedly closed his Elohim Church shortly before the elections. The circumstances surrounding the closure and his subsequent absence remain unclear.

The situation has intensified following Muhoozi’s latest announcement that security operations targeting Elwelu have resulted in the seizure of additional firearms and ammunition, the arrest of his driver and the recovery of a vehicle reportedly used by the retired general.

“In our continuing operation to dismantle Private Elweru’s treachery and criminality. We have seized more guns and ammunition he had stashed away in different places,” Muhoozi posted on X, thanking residents of Teso for providing information.

The army chief also warned that anyone assisting Elwelu would face serious consequences as the search continues. He has accused the retired officer of stockpiling weapons and plotting against military leadership, allegations that have not been independently established.

Elwelu’s Disappearance Raises Questions

Elwelu’s reported disappearance has attracted renewed attention because of his public fallout with Muhoozi. The retired general previously served as Deputy CDF before retiring in 2025 and also worked as a presidential adviser on Teso and Karamoja affairs.

He drew national and international criticism over his role in the November 2016 military operation in Kasese, in which more than 100 people were killed. The United States later imposed sanctions on him over his role in the operation.

Elwelu also attracted public attention in 2019 after constructing a distinctive temple associated with his Elohim Church. The church’s reported closure has added another unanswered question to the unfolding situation.

Meanwhile, commentator Andrew Mwenda has made separate claims about an alleged plot involving a militia, while reports have also circulated concerning Elwelu’s family. These claims require independent verification.

It remains unclear whether Elwelu is deliberately keeping a low profile or has left the country. His current whereabouts and his response to the latest allegations have not been established.
