A fresh Tooro Kingdom succession battle has emerged following reports that Prince Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, the Omusuga and head of the Babiito royal clan, declared himself King after the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Kamurasi, who is the late King’s uncle, reportedly made the declaration after participating in traditional rituals at Karuzika Palace and addressing the kingdom’s subjects following Oyo’s death on August 27, 2026.
The reported move has immediately raised questions over who will take over the Tooro throne.
Prince Kamurasi is one of the most influential figures within the Babiito royal establishment. As Omusuga, he plays a key role in matters concerning the royal clan and has previously overseen the regency during King Oyo’s childhood.
However, his reported declaration comes against the backdrop of the Kingdom’s earlier confirmation that King Oyo left behind a Prince heir, whose identity will be revealed at an appropriate time in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions.
The reported development therefore sets the stage for a potentially complicated succession process as the Kingdom continues mourning its late monarch.
For now, the identity of the next Omukama remains a matter of intense public interest, with attention firmly fixed on Karuzika Palace and the traditional processes that will determine the future of the Tooro throne.
