South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, who has died at the age of 25. The South African government confirmed his death, although no official cause has yet been disclosed.
Adams had only recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in all three group-stage matches and helped the national team reach the knockout stage for the first time in its history.
At club level, the gifted midfielder played a key role in Mamelodi Sundowns’ successful 2025/26 CAF Champions League campaign, earning widespread praise for his performances in midfield.
His death comes just weeks after the passing of his grandmother, Marianna Adams. Despite the personal loss, Adams showed remarkable resilience by representing South Africa in their World Cup match against the Czech Republic, earning admiration from supporters for his professionalism and commitment.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football community, with the South African Football Players’ Union describing Adams as a gifted player whose life ended far too soon. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, also paid tribute, saying the nation had lost one of its brightest football talents.
