The Babiito Royal Clan has dismissed objections from Princess Ruth Komuntale and Princess Elizabeth Bagaya over the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next King of Tooro, challenging the princesses to take the matter to court.

Babiito clan spokesperson Moses Musinguzi said the clan has the authority to elect the Omukama and will continue with succession activities despite objections from members of the royal family.

Musinguzi also defended the process through which Prince Edward was selected, saying the people involved were themselves members of the royal family. He further defended the role of Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito clan.

“Those I have seen talking are the two Babiitokati (princesses). Let them go to court; for us we are continuing with our functions. We shall find them in court and the court will tell us whether we are wrong or they are wrong,” Musinguzi said.

His remarks follow a public rejection of Prince Edward’s selection by Princess Komuntale, the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s sister, and Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, the late King’s paternal aunt.

Komuntale said the announcement of a new King was inaccurate, arguing that her late brother had left a Will naming his son as heir to the Tooro throne.

The princesses also argued that the wider royal family had not been consulted before the announcement and questioned the decision to proceed with the selection before discussions surrounding King Oyo’s Will were concluded.

Musinguzi, however, insisted that the Babiito process was legitimate and said the clan was prepared to defend its decision through legal and institutional channels.

He further argued that disputes over royal leadership are not new in Tooro, saying historical succession battles were sometimes settled through physical conflict, while modern disagreements can be handled through courts and other institutions.

“Kingship is to be fought for. Titles are to be fought for. Even our ancestors used to fight for the throne. Nowadays we no longer use spears and guns; we use computers and pens,” he said.

The latest exchange deepens the succession dispute following King Oyo’s death, with competing positions emerging over who has the authority to determine the next ruler and the extent to which the late King’s Will should guide the process.

For now, the Babiito clan maintains that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma’s selection stands, while calling on those challenging it to seek legal redress.
