Ugandan businesswoman and socialite Zari Hassan has reportedly made the difficult decision to temporarily close her business offices in South Africa as xenophobic attacks and anti-migrant protests continue to intensify across parts of the country.
Despite holding legal investor status in South Africa, Zari is taking precautionary measures to protect her employees, business assets, and operations amid growing concerns over the safety of foreign-owned businesses.
Addressing the situation on social media, Zari reassured her followers that she and her family are safe. However, she admitted there is uncertainty over whether businesses owned by foreign nationals could become targets as tensions continue to rise.
The worsening security situation has also prompted action from the Ugandan government. Following a directive from President Yoweri Museveni, Uganda has evacuated hundreds of its citizens from South Africa. Reports indicate that between 273 and 564 Ugandans have already been flown home, with additional evacuation flights expected in the coming days.
The developments come amid increasing fears over the safety of migrants and foreign investors as unrest continues in major South African cities, including Johannesburg. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation while affected governments work to ensure the safety of their citizens.
