Veteran Ugandan journalist and political commentator Timothy Kalyegira has resurfaced at Kira Magistrates Court after reportedly going missing for several days, where he is now facing criminal charges.

According to an official Uganda Police charge sheet dated June 29, 2026, seen by our website reads, Kalyegira, also known as Nyakahuma, has been charged with two counts of broadcasting without a license under Sections 28(1) and 28(2) of the Uganda Communications Act, Cap 103.

The charge sheet alleges that the 58-year-old journalist operated The Kampala Express between 2013 and 2026 and The Uganda Records between 2014 and 2026 without the required broadcasting license.

Before his court appearance, reports circulating online claimed Kalyegira had been abducted. He had reportedly been missing since Friday, a day that also marked his birthday. Neighbours said they had not seen him since then, while his phone remained switched off, sparking concern among family members and supporters. Those claims have not been independently verified.

Earlier reports had suggested Kalyegira would face charges related to computer misuse. However, the official police charge sheet presented in court lists broadcasting without a license as the offences against him.

Kalyegira, a longtime political commentator known for his outspoken analysis and previous legal battles over his public commentary, remains at the center of growing public discussion over media regulation, licensing enforcement, and the treatment of journalists in Uganda.
