Fresh details emerging from the prosecution in the treason case against opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye have introduced new allegations involving several prominent opposition figures.
According to court documents presented by the State, Salaam Musumba allegedly invited Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, political activist Lubega Mukaku, and political analyst Charles Rwomushana to a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, where they reportedly met a British army veteran identified only as “AW.”
State prosecutors allege that the meeting was convened to discuss plans to overthrow the Ugandan government through armed force.
The prosecution further claims that the group sought military training and intelligence support from the British veteran during the discussions.
According to the State, “AW” was, however, secretly participating in an undercover operation linked to Uganda’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
Prosecutors allege that the British veteran recorded the meetings held in Brussels, as well as subsequent conversations conducted via Zoom. The recordings are expected to form part of the prosecution’s evidence during the trial.
The allegations were presented as part of the State’s case before court and are yet to be tested through the judicial process.
The accused persons have the right to challenge the prosecution’s evidence, and no court has yet determined the truth of the allegations. They are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in accordance with the law.
The high-profile case continues to attract national attention as court proceedings unfold.
