Former Aruu County MP Odonga Otto has sparked controversy after accusing some people from Buganda and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) of allegedly campaigning against Olara Otunnu’s bid for UN Secretary-General.
In a strongly worded post on X, Otto described the alleged campaign as “tribal,” “naive” and “unpatriotic,” questioning why Ugandans would oppose one of their own in an international race.
Otunnu, a veteran Ugandan diplomat from northern Uganda, was officially nominated by the Ugandan government in July 2026 to contest for the UN’s top position.
He previously served in senior United Nations positions, including as Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict.
Otto urged Ugandans to focus on supporting Otunnu’s candidacy rather than attacking it on social media, while also pointing to concerns over Uganda’s human rights situation.
His remarks have added a political and regional dimension to Otunnu’s international campaign, with questions now emerging over whether those accused will respond.
